How a plate is recorded

  1. The Cube: a black enclosure with a slot at the front for the plate

    Step 1

    Photograph the plate

The plate goes into the Cube and is photographed under the same light and from the same angle every time.

  2. Cube Plate Capture in a browser, showing a live camera view of the plate with a Take picture button

    Step 2

    Mark up the growths

The analyst marks the colonies they counted and any they discounted.

  3. The mark-up screen: each growth boxed on the plate and listed by type as bacteria, yeast or mould

    Step 3

    Save with the result

The annotated image is stored with the result, so the record carries its own evidence.

The final annotated plate: five numbered, colour-coded boxes marking bacteria, mould and yeast colonies

Final result

Every growth numbered and typed (B bacteria, M mould, Y yeast) on the plate itself.

FAQ

  • Does the Cube count the colonies?

No. The analyst still reads the plate. The Cube photographs it consistently and keeps a record of what they counted and discounted.

  • Do we need MRS to use the Cube?

No. It works on its own using a web interface, or alongside MRS if you already run it.

  • Where are the images stored?

Using the web interface images are not stored, you can download them and save to your local storage.

  • Does the Cube need qualifying?

No. As its purely an assistive technology, it does not directly enter results.
